About Firesounds

Last winter, on a snowy Wisconsin night, my wife Jen did what millions of Americans do when its chilly - she turned on our gas fireplace. A light bulb immediately went off over her head. She said to me, "All we get from this fireplace is a glow, a hum, and heat. You know what’s missing? Sound." She suggested we make a CD with the sounds of a real woodburning fireplace to make our fireplace experience even better.

I replied with a reaction we've gotten used to lately: snickers, immediately followed by "why the heck didn’t I think of that?"

We approached Rob Haggar of Haggar Audio Productions with the idea. Rob and I have made dozens of award-winning radio commercials over the past 12 years. As if scripted, Rob initially laughed. Then he said "why didn’t I think of that?" And shortly thereafter he said, "let's do it".

We were in business. And the compact disc "Firesounds" was born.

The result is a delightfully soothing 72-minute digitally recorded CD. All the pops, crackles and hisses of a real wood burning fireplace come through in stereo, but Rob removed some of the sounds that don’t match the look of a gas fireplace, like the big burn of the newspapers and kindling, giant pops, and falling logs. The CD also addresses a big flaw of many gas fireplaces by covering up the annoying hum of the blower motor.

We hope the disc will strike a chord with folks who want to decompress from today's hectic lifestyle. When you listen to Firesounds, you seem to naturally relax. You get a very pleasant, tranquil feeling.

The word is spreading. Our story has been written about across the US. We've been interviewed by radio stations as far away as the Caribbean and New Zealand.

And when our kids aren't tossing Cheerios around, watching the Lion King or trying to wrestle our cat, they help us get orders out the door, which helps us enjoy Firesounds even more.
